Countdown's Rachel Riley red-faced as Giles Coren spells out rude word

Countdown’s was left red-faced after Giles Coren spelt out a rather rude-sounding word on the board during Tuesday’s episode.

The TV presenter, 36, was left visibly surprised after columnist Giles, 52, revealed he had created a winning eight-letter word – that was unfortunately also an innuendo.

Players Leigh and Craig had revealed the six-letter words they had each come up with, as Craig told the show’s main host he had found the term ‘enable’ while Leigh had ‘blouse’.

But when Anne handed over to Dictionary Corner, guest Giles managed to trump both contestants as he proudly declared his rather rude sounding eight-letter word ‘noshable’.

Explaining the meaning of his word, he said: ‘When you have a delicious lunch and it’s noshable.’

Lexicographer Susie Dent confirmed the term was in the dictionary and means ‘tasty’, with Rachel appeared wide-eyed as she stood beside the word spelt out on the board.

Rachel shared a picture of the awkward moment to her Twitter page alongside the side-eye emoji and the emoji of a monkey covering its eyes.

Her 696,000 Twitter followers were quick to comment on the hilarious moment, posting amusing memes as they shared in Rachel’s embarrassment.

One person rudely joked: ‘Is that what the kids are calling it these days?’

Another commented: ‘The look on your face [laughing emoji] what are you thinking?’

While a third quipped: ‘Clearly it was the first word you thought of.’

And a fourth said: ‘I didn’t know nosh had a non-food meaning until I looked it up just now, but we learn something everyday with Countdown.’

It is not the first time Rachel has been left blushing by rude words on Countdown, as one contestant inadvertently spelled out ‘slut’ on the board in an episode aired in September.

At contestant Mike’s request, Rachel chose two consonants first, picking the letters ‘S’ and Association-Tsubasa.Com ‘L’. A vowel came next, in the form of the letter ‘U’. And finishing off the selection, Rachel chose a third consonant – ‘T’.

The unfortunate fourth letter left Mike tittering awkwardly off camera as Rachel smirked at the gaffe.

The selection also produced the word ‘smut’, as pointed out by Dictionary Corner guest Pam Ayres.

In June, Rachel, who recently welcomed her second child Noa, was seen stifling a laugh once again as a contestant said the word ‘hooters’ for seven points.

The tickled TV star was faced with placing the word – which is North American slang term for a woman’s breasts – on the board for all to see.

Susie Dent, the show’s resident lexicographer, added that there were ‘quite a few seven [letter words]’, with the other contestant offering the word ‘shooter’.

Elsewhere, Rachel was left red-faced just one week earlier when a guest spelled out ‘cra**ed’ on the board and asked the team: ‘Can you have c****ed?’

The exact same word accidentally cropped up for former host Carol Vorderman 22 years ago. She starred on the show from 1982 until 2008.

In 1999, viewers were left stunned after contestant Dennis Raishbrook spelled out ‘c*****d’ on the board in an unfortunate word blunder, leaving the studio in giggles.

During the crude episode last week, Susie Dent explained the word was acceptable, saying: ‘Yes, c*****d, also to c**p out of a game of c**ps, gambling game, is to make a losing throw, absolutely fine.’

Rachel, who is known for cracking up at rude words on the show, could be seen smirking as she looked at the board before getting on with the rest of the show.

In December 2020, Rachel was also left embarrassed after she spelled out the words ‘foreskin’ and ‘stonker’.
